Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. ha comunicato Giovedì di avere sospeso i piani di vendita di "Manhunt 2" dopo che il videogame ha subito delle restrizioni a causa della sua elevata violenza.
Il gioco, sviluppato dalla stessa Take-Two, autrice anche dei controversi titoli "Grand Theft Auto" e "Bully", aveva originariamente come data di lancio il 10 Luglio. Take-Two ha detto che i piani di distribuzione del gioco sono "temporaneamente sospesi" a causa del divieto di vendita emanato dalla Gran Bretagna (e anche dall'Italia, ndr) e della valutazione "Adults Only" data dagli Stati Uniti, la quale di fatto impedisce la vendita di questo titolo sulle console prodotte da Sony Corp. e Nintendo Co. Ltd.
"Noi continueremo a sostenere questo gioco straordinario. Noi crediamo nella libertà di espressione creativa, come nel mercato responsabile, entrambi sono necessari per il nostro business di creare grande intrattenimento," ha dichiarato Take-Two.
"Manhunt 2" mette il giocatore nei panni di uno psicotico che scappa da un istituto psichiatrico ed uccide i nemici con una varietà di armi ed oggetti, con l'intento di scoprire cosa è successo alla sua famiglia.
La dichiarazione di Take-Two ha seguito i commenti di Mercoledì del Chairman Strauss Zelnick nei quali definiva il gioco un'opera d'arte.
Le opzioni che si presentano per la compagnia sono di cancellare le vendite del gioco, venderlo inalterato ma unicamente per piattaforma PC, e quindi limitare drasticamente i ricavi, oppure modificarlo per ottenere giudizi meno restrittivi.
Era originariamente previsto che "Manhunt 2" fruttasse circa $40 milioni in vendite per Take-Two, la quale ha ottenuto ricavi lo scorso anno per oltre $1 miliardo, secondo le ricerche di Wedbush Morgan.
Video game publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. said on Thursday it has suspended plans to sell "Manhunt 2" after the title was slapped with restrictive ratings for its extreme violence.
The game, developed by the same Take-Two studio behind the controversial "Grand Theft Auto" and "Bully" titles, had originally been scheduled for a July 10 release.
Take-Two said it "temporarily suspended" distribution plans for the game while it reviewed its options following the banning of the game in Britain and a U.S. ratings body decision to give it an "Adults Only" rating.
The rating would prevent its release on game machines made by Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. Ltd.
"We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment," Take-Two said in a statement.
"Manhunt 2" casts the player in the role of a psychotic man who escapes a mental institution and kills enemies with a variety of weapons and objects as he tries to find out what happened to his family.
Take-Two's statement followed comments from Chairman Strauss Zelnick on Wednesday saying he fully backed the game and considered it a work of art.
The company's options include canceling the game entirely, releasing it unchanged only for personal computers -- a move that would drastically limit sales -- or altering its content to achieve a less-restrictive rating.
"Manhunt 2" was originally expected to bring in about $40 million in sales for Take-Two, which had just over $1 billion in total revenue last year, according to Wedbush Morgan research.
