Con il comunicato stampa di seguito allegato, AMD ha annunciato l'adozione da parte di Apple delle schede grafiche appartenenti alla linea ATI Radeon HD 4800 per l'assemblaggio dei suoi sistemi ad alte prestazioni iMac e Mac Pro. Più in dettaglio, il produttore dei Sistemi Operativi Mac OS X ha utilizzato le video card ATI Radeon HD 4870 a completamento della configurazione dei Mac Pro e le ATI Radeon HD 4850 per gli iMac.
Il sodalizio tra AMD e Apple nasce in questo caso dalla necessità di supportare a livello hardware le possibilità offerte da OpenCL 1.0, che è parte dell'OS Snow Leopard, e che permette di attivare la tecnologia ATI Stream di cui le Radeon della linea HD 4800 sono dotate.
Ricordiamo che la tecnologia multi-processore OpenCL permette di far eseguire alla gpu alcuni set di istruzioni tipicamente a carico della cpu, o processore centrale, con tutti gli ovvi benefici in termini di velocizzazione delle applicazioni.
